OVERVIEW
Walk the Kerry Way — From Sneem, at Your Own Pace
The Kerry Way is a 200km waymarked walking trail that circles the Iveragh Peninsula — one of the most celebrated long-distance walking routes in Ireland. The Kerry Way Self-Guided Escape gives you four days on the trail’s most dramatic southern coastal section, walking at your own pace with everything taken care of.
Each morning you’ll catch the local bus from Sneem to your starting point — a different trailhead each day — and walk the Kerry Way’s waymarked yellow-man markers back toward Sneem. No navigation skills required beyond following the route; no logistics beyond lacing your boots. Maps, trail information, bus transfers, breakfast and packed lunch are all included.
Based at Álaind Lodge in Sneem throughout — no moving accommodation, unpack once and stay put — you return each evening to a beautifully appointed room with Sneem village on your doorstep.

THE ROUTE
What You’ll Walk
The southern coastal section of the Kerry Way follows the Iveragh coastline through some of Kerry’s most spectacular scenery — past ancient ring forts, through oak woodlands, along cliff-top paths with Atlantic views and down to blue-flag beaches. The trail is waymarked throughout with the Kerry Way’s distinctive yellow-man markers.
Arrive at Álaind Lodge. Check in, settle in and meet Fergal for your welcome briefing — a detailed introduction to each day’s route, terrain, what to watch for and how to get the most from the walk. Map handover and trail notes. Early night recommended.
Bus from Sneem to the trailhead. The Kerry Way leads along the dramatic coastline of Kenmare Bay — rugged terrain where the mountains drop into the sea. The route passes Staigue Fort and past the atmospheric ruins of Coad Church. Stunning ocean views throughout.

Bus to the start at Caherdaniel, with an optional detour to Derrynane House and Kerry’s famous Blue Flag beach set in a landscape of mature woodland, dunes and the seashore nature trail. For those up for it, you’ll have the option of an ocean swim. Rising up towards the Ring of Kerry, you’ll enjoy some of the finest coastal views in Ireland. The descent to Waterville is a pleasure with coastal views all the way.

Today heads in the other direction from Templenoe — west along the Kerry Way toward Sneem, with spectacular coastal views across the bay and the Beara Peninsula beyond. The route finishes at Tahilla and — on the right day — warrants a visit to the pier, a beautiful and peaceful spot.

The longest and most rewarding day — moorland trails climbing to Gortamulin before sweeping descents into Kenmare. Kerry Way Self-Guided Escape — FAQs
-
No. The Kerry Way is waymarked throughout with the distinctive yellow-man trail markers. As long as you follow the markers, you’re on the right route. Fergal’s briefing on arrival covers each day’s route in detail and detailed maps are provided. WhatsApp support is available throughout if you have any questions on the trail.

If you need to stop early for any reason, contact Fergal. He’ll advise on the best way to get back to Sneem — public bus or, if needed, he can arrange collection. This is one of the benefits of having Álaind’s support behind a self-guided holiday.
-
Absolutely. The beauty of self-guided is that the pace is entirely yours. If you want to spend an extra hour at Derrynane Beach or take the long detour to Staigue Fort, you can. The bus timetable for the return journey should be checked each day, but Fergal will cover this in the briefing.
-
The southern coastal section is manageable for walkers with reasonable fitness and trail experience. It is not a beginner’s first ever trail — sections can be wet, uneven, or exposed — but it does not require advanced hillwalking experience. If you’ve done day walks on trails before, you’ll be well prepared.
-
Yes. The Kerry Way extends well beyond the southern coastal section and additional walking days can be arranged. Contact Fergal to discuss options for extending your route or for a full bespoke trip.
