Whether you are a seasoned trail walker or this is your first such holiday, you’ll be in great company on our tours. Our typical small group size is between 6 and 12 and usually includes a mix of couples, friends and solo travellers.
The walks consist of easy to moderate walks of 12-14 KM each day of your holiday. We decide the exact walking routes depending on the weather forecast and whether the holiday includes two, three or four days of walking.
Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Arrival in Sneem
On Day 1 our guests on the Kerry Walking Trails Walking holiday arrive at Álaind Lodges on Sportsfield Road, Sneem, Co. Kerry. You’ll find directions and a map on our website. In the evening our small group of walkers gathers for a welcome drink and a holiday briefing.
Day 2: Kerry Trail #1 – Derrynane Loop including the Kerry Way, Derrynane Beach, Mass Path and Abbey Island.
Derrynane Trail Description: 13km with 340m Height Gain. Maximum height 150m. Approx. 5 hrs Easy to Moderate difficulty.
This wonderful loop walk begins and ends in the village of Caherdaniel. Described as a timeless walk through the grounds of The Liberator Daniel O’Connell’s Home, it offers a wonderful mix of quiet green lanes, stunning sea views, native woodland, beautiful beach and wild Atlantic shoreline.
Reaching a maximum height of 150m, this relatively low level seaside walk still rewards with fabulous panoramic coastal views. Descending from here affords spectacular sea views all the way to the shores of Derrynane harbour and Derrynane beach.
Derrynane Beach, one of the finest beaches in Ireland, has achieved the internationally recognised blue flag award. Derrynane’s Abbey Island and Burial ground at the North end of the beach makes for a lovely extension to our walking trail due to its beautiful views of the Atlantic and Skellig Michael in the distance.
After an exhilerating walk along the beach we’ll cross over the dunes and pick up the Kerry Way once again to take us back to our starting point at Caherdaniel and our return journey to Sneem.
After relaxing for a while with a drink at Álaind Lodges, you’ll retire to your rooms to freshen up and get ready for your chosen evening dining option.
Day 3: Kerry Trail #2 – Sneem Loop Trails Combination of Lománagh Loop and Fermoyle Loop in Sneem.
Sneem Loop Trail Description: 14km with 345m Height Gain. Maximum height 180m. Approx. 5 hrs. Easy to Moderate difficulty.
The Loop Walks in Sneem are a mix of tarred road, gravel track and hillside meadow. Due to their low lying nature (total height gain of 345m) this Kerry Walk can be done in all seasons. What’s more, you’ll encounter many animal and wildlife as you progress through the GeoPark area.
Kerry GeoPark incorporates Sneem village and its environs, which experts widely recognise as one of the most geologically significant locations. Why, you may ask? Because its old red sandstone mountains, glaciated features, ancient archaeological sites, Irish Language, history and culture all combine to enhance the attractiveness of this remarkable region. You simply have to venture into its heart to really appreciate its splendour.
We’re combining both loop walks into a one day trail of about 14km which allows us to enjoy the most interesting sections of these two loops in one day.
Day 4: Kerry Trail #3 Dunkerrons Experience – A Walk Across the Rugged Slopes of Knocknagantee, Coomnacronia and Finnararagh
Dunkerrons Trail Description: 12Km with a height gain of 380m; height loss of 450m and a maximum height of 400m.
Today’s walk is all about traversing the lower slopes of Sneem’s Dunkerron Mountains. Although these mountain are between 600m and 700m high, we’ll be keeping to a maximum height of approximately 400m. This means that we’ll get up close to the beautiful geological features of the Kerry Geo Park.
Today we venture higher into the Dunkerrons of Sneem, which colliding continental plates formed over 100 million years. Before this, shallow tropical seas previously covered the land giving rise to their old red sandstone rock makeup.
The weather and ice movements eroded the sandstone over millions of years and today you’ll find a geological wonderland of sheer rock faces, rugged ridges and deep walled cooms. Traversing Finnararagh, Coomnacronia and Knocknagantee – the mountain backdrops of Sneem – we’ll encounter three coom lakes and a 100m tall waterfall.
If we’re lucky, we might even catch sight of the Kerry whitetailed sea eagles which regularly visit the area.
Day 5 (Five Night Holiday Package Only): Kerry Trail #4 The Kerry Way Experience – A Walk Along A Section of the Kerry Way Returning to Álaind Lodges
Kerry Way Trail Description: 14-16 Km with a height gain of max 460m; height loss of 473 m and a maximum height of 195m.
For this day’s walking we can choose to walk The Kerry Way trail from Catherdaniel to Sneem or Blackwater Bridge to Sneem. When deciding on which to take, we’ll take weather and walking duration into account. Whichever we chose you’ll be assured of wild countryside, sea views and easy going walking. These are two of the nicest sections of the Kerry Way.
