Our guided walks consist of moderate to strenuous 5-6 Hour walks. These do involve extended periods of steep ascents and perhaps 800m height gains.
Although our choice of walking routes is weather dependent, our preference is for a moderate walk on Day 1 with a more challenging walk on Day 2. Both walks will explore the beauty of The Sneem Dunkerrons and the Kerry Geopark.
While staying at Álaind Lodges, the Sneem Dunkerron Mountain Range forms a spectacular backdrop to the Sneem village and to your accommodation. Hosting some of the tallest mountains in Kerry, makes Sneem a fantastic destination for hill walking enthusiasts.
Kerry Geopark is the name given to the beautiful region around Sneem, stretching from Kenmare Bay to the Dunkerrons Mountains. Although perhaps not widely known, Kerry Geopark is an internationally recognised area for its geological significance. Thankfully for us, it also offers some of the best hiking and walking opportunities in Ireland.
Holiday Itinerary Day 1 – Arrival in Sneem
On Day 1 our Álaind walking guests on the Dunkerron Mountains Walking holiday arrive at Álaind Lodges, Sportsfield Road, Sneem, Co. Kerry. On the same evening our small group of walkers gathers for some light food, a beverage and a holiday briefing.
Walking Itinerary Day 2 – Mountain Trail presenting a Moderate Challenge
The first of our two walks will take in one of the lower ridges in Sneem to get us warmed up and ready for the more challenging Day 2. However, don’t be complacent, this is still not a walk in the park! You can expect to spend 5 hours on the walk and gain over 500m in height across wild open mountain side and stunning views.
Later in the evening our guests can enjoy an evening meal in Sneem village.
Walking Itinerary Day 3 – Climbing Knocknagantee and Finneraragh or Mullaghanattin and Beann
Today we’re setting out on to climb some of Ireland’s highest mountains. The highest in Sneem is Mullaghanattin at 773m, which some call Ireland’s Matterhorn due to its aspect. Second highest is Beann 775m, followed by Finneraragh 667m and Knocknagantee 636m. Whichever route we chose on the day, will reveal incredible wild, remote and rugged landscapes. Precipitous mountain walls, lakes and waterfalls are all around, which simply combine to make this an amazing place.
Later in the evening our guests can enjoy another evening meal in Sneem village.
