On Day 1 our guests on the Dunkerron Walking Holiday arrive at Álaind Lodges (postcode V93AC80) or a partner B&B in Sneem. You’ll find directions and a map on our website. Please contact us if you require collection from Killarney Airport or Train Station. In the evening our small group of walkers gathers for a holiday briefing.
The first of our two walks will take in one of the lower ridges in Sneem to get us warmed up and ready for the more challenging Day 2.
However, don’t be complacent, this is still a wonderful challenge. You can expect to spend 5 hours on the walk and gain over 500m in height across wild open mountain side.
We set out initially onto a section of the Kerry Way, which is also a local pilgrimage trail. We pass a number of holy wells along the way before we set out onto the wide ridge.
To the one side we’re spoiled with views of mountains, valleys and lakes and to the other mountains stretching down to the sea. The coastal view are especially beautiful when the light is right and haze-free.
If we’re lucky, we might even catch sight of the Kerry white-tailed sea eagles which regularly visit the area.
At the end of our walk, we’ll enjoy some apres-walk refreshments before getting ready for your chosen evening dining in Sneem village.
Today we’re setting out on to climb some of Ireland’s highest mountains. The highest in Sneem is Mullaghanattin at 773m, which some call Ireland’s Matterhorn due to its aspect. Second highest is Beann 775m, followed by Finneraragh 667m and Knocknagantee 636m. Whichever route we chose on the day, will reveal incredible wild, remote and rugged landscapes. Precipitous mountain walls, lakes and waterfalls are all around, which simply combine to make this an amazing place.
One final push to reach Mullaghanattin Summit
If you are enjoying a three night walking holiday, you’ll be departing Sneem after hopefully a good night’s rest and a full breakfast.
If you are booked on a four night walking break or longer, you’ll be preparing for another excitement filled day of hiking or walking in Sneem.
A nonrefundable deposit of €150 per person will be charged when booking this booking this walking holiday package (or full payment if you are booking within 4 weeks of arrival).
The balance of the payment is due 4 weeks before the start of the trip.

What’s more, our holidays are ideal for couples, groups and single guests.

This is important as these hikes are classified as strenuous or difficult. You can expect extended ascents, exposed heights and steep or broken ground.
Waterproof boots and suitable clothing (no jeans or cotton tops) are essential.
You can walk year round in Sneem as even winter conditions are mild with snow and ice being uncommon. The average weather temperatures are between 7C degrees (45F degrees ) in January and February, and 15.5C degrees (60F degrees) in July and August. In fact the weather is largely frost free thanks to the warm Atlantic Gulf Stream that allows even semi-tropical vegetation to thrive here.

Had a great weekend here with Alaind Walking Sneem. The accomodation was excellent and the personal, warm and homely welcome and attention was second to none.
The walks were so enjoyable - Part of The Kerry Way & the Derrynane Mass Path Loop Walk was the first walk. A nice lead in to the next walk in The Dunkerron Mountains taking in Eagles Lake, Coomanassig Waterfall and Coomnacronia. Knocknagantee could be seen clearly, Loch Cluain Eachlainn and Kenmare River in the distance. The visibility on both days was excellent as the weather was magical allowing for amazing views well into the distance.
A sea swim was even taken in on the first day which was a lovely finish to the walking on the first day. Thanks Fergal.
On the second day we ended the walk both myself and another fellow walker with a gorgeous hot soak in a Seaweed Bath overlooking the South Kerry Mountains and Sneem Estuary.
Fergal is an exceptional guide and his knowledge of the area and walks was superb. He made every walk very enjoyable taking time out to enjoy all the spectacular views and giving time for those camera shot memories. In such a small area there was lots to do but not enough time to do it all which is a great complaint.
Patrica & Chris a great team looking after the Bed and Breakfast and making sure I was well set up for day. Thanks everyone for making my trip ever so enjoyable.
Have just returned from a fabulous 3-day mini break with Alaind . Fergal is both a professional and friendly guide. The lodge - just outside Sneem village - is a great base for walks .Trish and Chris will make you very welcome here. This area is a hidden gem on the Ring of Kerry.>
We did the Derrynane Loop and Lower Dunkerrons - super hikes with coastal and mountain views of Kerry Geo Park .
Fergal allowed plenty of time for photos as it was hard not to stop and gaze in wonder! Transport is well organised and he even managed to fit in a swim at the end of one of the walks.
I hope to return
