Blazing real fire stove – a relaxing end to the day

Description: Easy to Moderate; 10Km; 4hrs; ascent gain 380m; max height 400m.

Today’s walk is all about traversing the lower slopes of Sneem’s Dunkerron Mountains. Although these mountain are between 600m and 700m high, we’ll be keeping to a maximum height of approximately 400m. This means that we’ll get up close to the beautiful geological features of the Kerry Geo Park, no matter the weather.

Standing Stone at Dromtine with Knocknagantee and Coomnacronia Mountains in the background

Venturing into the Dunkerrons of Sneem, we experience the ruggedness of these mountains which colliding continental plates began forming over 300 million years ago. Before this, believe it or not shallow tropical seas previously covered the land giving rise to their old red sandstone rock makeup.

The weather and ice movements eroded the sandstone over millions of years and today you’ll find a geological wonderland of sheer rock faces, rugged ridges and deep walled cooms.

On this walk we’ll visit the wonderful Eagles lake, Coomanassig 100m tall waterfall and the vertical cliff walls of Knocknagantee. Next we’ll traverse across Sneem’s mountainous backdrop for a lunchstop at Coomnacronia lake.

Lunch at Coomnacronia Lake

The tastiest lunches are those enjoyed in good company in the mountains.

If we’re lucky, we might even catch sight of the Kerry white-tailed sea eagles which regularly visit the area.

At the end of our walk, we’ll enjoy some apre-walk refreshments before getting ready for your chosen evening dining in Sneem village.ascent

Description: Easy to Moderate difficulty. 9km; height gain 180m; maximum height 180m; 3 hrs.

The Lomanagh Loop Walk in Sneem is a mix of tarred road, gravel track and hillside meadow. Due to its low lying nature (total height gain of 200m) this Kerry Walk is a very scenic adventure that everyone will love and in all seasons.

We’ll start today’s walk from the gates of Álaind Lodges.  We’ll be walking for approximately 9km and 3 hrs. This is a very enjoyable walk with some lovely scenery and landscapes and is gentle enough not to tire you out.

You will enjoy stunning Ring of Kerry views of the Kerry Mountains, the wild Atlantic and beautiful lakes & waterfalls.

Afterwards you’ll relax in your luxury accommodation at Álaind Lodges, Sneem – your base for the duration of your holiday.

Everyone who loves walking on way-marked trails but also like to spice it up with some off-trail mountain routes on lower hills.

Rest assured we take plenty of stops to take in the views and chat. We keep the group together, so everyone has a rewarding experience.

What’s more, our holidays are ideal for couples, groups and single guests.

Walking participants should have experience of upland walking and be of good health with reasonable level of fitness.

This is important as you can expect moderate ascents & descents at the start and end of walks. We will also traverse slopes through sometimes long grass and bracken. Waterproof boots with good grips are required when walking in the mountains.

You can walk year round in Sneem as winter consitions are mild with snow and ice being uncommon. The average weather temperatures are between 7C degrees (45F degrees ) in January and February, and 15.5C degrees (60F degrees) in July and August. In fact the weather is largely frost free thanks to the warm Atlantic Gulf Stream that allows even semi-tropical vegetation to thrive here.

The maximum number of guests is 10 persons. Each holiday requires two or more persons to take place.

Please contact Fergal Harrington at +353851422677 if you want to discuss your holiday requirements. Alternatively, you can send me an email.
