As we are surrounded by fabulous walking opportunities, we're perfectly situated if you want to go and explore the area for yourself. We call this a self-guided package where you'll have maps and back up support but I won't be leading you on your walks. I'll be glad to help you organise this and you can check out our self-guided 'Kerry Geo-Park' and 'Kerry Way' packages on our Holidays Page. You can also combine both of these for a longer stay. Alternatively, you can simply contact me (Fergal Harrington) directly and I'll discuss all the walking holiday options with you.
On Day 1 our guests on our two night Active Breaks arrive at Álaind Lodges on Sportsfield Road, Sneem, Co. Kerry, V93AC80. You’ll find directions and a map on our website. Please contact me if you require collection from Killarney Airport or Train Station. I’ll brief you with the itinerary for your stay and you’re welcome to get comfortable in one of our lounges with a welcome drink.
Today’s walk is all about traversing the lower slopes of Sneem’s Dunkerron Mountains. Although these mountains are between 600m and 700m high, we’ll be keeping to a maximum height of approximately 400m. This means that, no matter the weather, we’ll get up close to the beautiful geological features of this stunning area.
Venturing higher into the Dunkerrons Mountains of Sneem, we’ll experience the ruggedness of these mountains and discover a geological wonderland of precipitous rock faces, rugged ridges and deep-walled cooms.
On this walk we’ll visit the wonderful mountain lake Coomnacronia, which makes for a lovely place to have a snack. Then we’ll traverse across the Mountain to Eagles lake, Coomanassig 100m tall waterfall and the vertical cliff walls of Knocknagantee.
If we’re lucky, we might even catch sight of the Kerry white-tailed sea eagles which regularly visit the area.
At the end of our walk, we’ll enjoy some apre-walk refreshments before getting ready for your chosen evening dining in Sneem village.
The Lomanagh Loop Walk in Sneem is a mix of tarred road, gravel track and hillside meadow. Due to its low lying nature (total height gain of 200m) this Kerry Walk is a very scenic adventure that everyone will love and in all seasons.
We’ll start today’s walk from the gates of Álaind Lodges. We’ll be walking for approximately 9km and 2.5hrs. This is a very enjoyable walk with some lovely scenery and landscapes and is gentle enough not to tire you out.
We’ll return to Álaind Lodges after the walk to freshen up and have some hearty soup and brown bread and or tea/coffee, to get yourself ready for the journey home.
A €100 per person deposit will be charged on all guided walking holiday bookings. If you cancel more than 4 weeks before arrival date, your deposit will be refunded.
If you want an exciting escape from your routine, this mini-break is for you. You’ll feel invigorated while exploring trails, open countryside and rugged mountain walks with a small group of walkers.
You will enjoy stunning Ring of Kerry views of the Kerry Mountains, the wild Atlantic and beautiful lakes & waterfalls.
Afterwards you’ll relax in your luxury accommodation at Álaind Lodges, Sneem – your base for the duration of your holiday.
Everyone who loves walking on way-marked trails but also like to spice it up with some off-trail mountain routes on lower hills.
Rest assured we take plenty of stops to take in the views and chat. We keep the group together, so everyone has a rewarding experience.
What’s more, our holidays are ideal for couples, groups and single guests.
Walking participants should have experience of upland walking and be of good health with reasonable level of fitness.
This is important as you can expect moderate ascents & descents at the start and end of walks. We will also traverse slopes through sometimes long grass and bracken. Waterproof boots are recommended when walking in the mountains.
You can walk year round in Sneem as winter consitions are mild with snow and ice being uncommon. The average weather temperatures are between 7C degrees (45F degrees ) in January and February, and 15.5C degrees (60F degrees) in July and August. In fact the weather is largely frost free thanks to the warm Atlantic Gulf Stream that allows even semi-tropical vegetation to thrive here.
