Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd October 2023.
We’re delighted and excited that Mountaineering Ireland’s Autumn Gathering is coming to town. Taking place in the mountains and trails around Sneem, the event is being hosted by Kenmare Walking Club as part of their celebrations as 40 years as a club.
The Autumn Gathering is an opportunity for members of Mountaineering Ireland from across Ireland to come meet up and to explore some of the finest walks and climb found in Ireland. It will be wonderful to see so many walkers and climbers staying in the village for the weekend.
The Mountaineering Ireland event brochure describes the Sneem Autumn Gathering as a “visit to some of the lesser known, yet beautiful, sandstone mountains on the Iveragh Peninsula.
The mountains surrounding Sneem have a wild and rugged character, with corrie lakes, rocky ridges and big skies above. Furthermore, some scenic sections of the Kerry Way are nearby for people to enjoy, all from the charming and colourful town of Sneem.
There is an exciting programme of activities taking place across the weekend, including hillwalking, navigation, rock climbing and an environment walk.
Fergal Harrington, Owner and Mountain Leader with Álaind Walking is involved in the weekend’s hillwalking activities, co-leading Saturday’s walk of Knocknagantee and Knockmoyle Mountains with Denis O’Sullivan of Kenmare Walking Club.
On Sunday Fergal will also be leading an additional walk visiting Sneem’s Mountain Lakes. Registration is via Mountaineering Ireland by email. He says “being involved in the Gathering is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the world class hillwalking that’s abundantly available in Sneem. When Ireland’s walking community experiences the wonderful nature and landscape here, we’re confident they’ll want to return again for more.
The base for the event is Sneem Hotel, with registration taking place on evening of Friday 20th and the main dinner on Saturday night.
The Sneem Autumn Gathering is shaping up to be a great event with all the six walks on Saturday fully booked.
