Build Your Confidence when Walking or Hiking with this Navigation and Mountain Skills Course – 25 & 26 May ’24
This Mountain Skills course is accredited by Mountaineering Ireland. A course has a maximum of six places. This two full day course will run from 9 AM to 5PM approximately. The next course dates are Saturday 25 & Sunday 26 May.
Are you Ready to take your hillwalking to the next level? If so, our Mountain Skills Training course 1, known as MS1 is for you. When you sign up, you’ll learn the mountain navigation skills and knowledge to walk safely and confidently in the mountains. Furthermore, I am an approved training Provider with Mountaineering Ireland.
The Mountain Skills That You Will Learn:
This two-day course, based in beautiful Sneem, Co. Kerry, will cover the MS1 Syllabus. While attending, you’ll master these fundamentals of mountain navigation:
- Master the Map: Learn to read maps like a pro, including grid references, contour interpretation, distance estimation and compass usage.
- Conquer Mountain Challenges: Understand and navigate around common mountain hazards like weather, terrain, and getting lost.
- Gear Up for Success: Choose the right equipment for your adventures and understand how to use it effectively.
- Plan Like a Pro: Develop your route planning skills, including pacing, timing, and responsible land access.
- Be Prepared for Anything: Learn basic emergency procedures to ensure a safe and enjoyable mountain experience.
This MS1 course is perfect for:
- Walkers who want to progress beyond well-marked trails.
- Hikers seeking to build their navigation skills and confidence.
- Anyone who wants to explore the mountains safely and responsibly.

€150 payable to Álaind Walking, which includes course materials and instruction.
€28 Mountain Skills Training Registration:
In addition to the course fee, all attendees will need to register for the MS scheme with Mountaineering Ireland (MI). Only do this when Fergal Harrington has confirmed with you that the course is taking place. Registration is free for those under 18, but for adults it is a one-time fee of €28 that covers MS1, MS2 and the MS Assessment. On payment of your registration fee, you will receive:
- A digital MS training record account.
- The official Mountain Skills Logbook.
- Certificate on completion of your MS1.
- MTA Timing card.
- BMC Safety on Mountains book.

In addition to being your approved training course provider, Fergal Harrington is also a qualified and experienced Mountain Leader. Furthermore, he’s a member of the Mountain Training Association (MTA) and fully Garda Vetted. Consequently, Fergal now bases all of his approved training and walking activities at Álaind Lodges and the Dunkerron Mountains in Sneem. Cancellation Policy
We understand that things come up!
- Changes more than 10 days in advance: No worries! We’ll happily refund 50% of your course fee.
- Changes within 10 days: Unfortunately, due to our small class size, refunds are not possible within 10 days of the course start.
- Unable to attend due to illness or bereavement: We completely understand. In these exceptional circumstances (with a doctor’s note for illness), you can transfer your booking to another available course date.
Please note: No-shows on the day of the course will not be eligible for a refund or transfer.
