The itinerary of all our holidays will be tailored to meet the expected weather conditions and the duration of each holiday.
On Day 1 our guests on the Dunkerron Walking Holiday arrive at Álaind Lodges (postcode V93AC80) or a partner B&B in Sneem. You’ll find directions and a map on our website. Please contact us if you require collection from Killarney Airport or Train Station. In the evening our small group of walkers gathers for a holiday briefing.
Today’s walk takes us to where the rugged Kerry mountains reach down to the jagged edge of the wild atlantic waters.
You’ll feel invigorated by the feeling of the wind in your face and the faint taste of the salty sea air. The panoramic views are breathtaking and are more impressive the higher you go.
The route takes us up to the top of a broad mountain top with sea views on three sides and the old signal tower from napoleonic times standing proud.
We continue along here for a while at a comfortable pace before beginning our descent to the cliffs below. You’ll typicall hear the wild waters crashing against the rocks before you see it and the raw power is a sight to behold.
Out to sea are the UNESCO protected Skellig Islands. You can only begin to imagine what life must have been like for the early Christian monks who lived on rocky outcrop far out in the atlantic.
Skirting the coastline is fun and exhillerating and we’ll hug it for as long as we can before rejoing the small land from where we began.
At the end of our walk, we’ll enjoy some apre-walk refreshments at Álaind Lodges before getting ready for your chosen evening dining in Sneem village.
Today’s walk starts by following and criss-crossing a little stream as it winds its way through to the idyllic meadow and woodland of Derrynane.
Very quickly you’ll unwind and feel very much at ease in these surroundings.
The magic continues as we’ll explore some of the exotic plants in the gardens of Derrynane House before moving on to Abbey Island and its middle-aged ruins – full of history.
Abbey island is home to the very rare flower the Kerry Lilly, which can be found in summer months. Ascending to the island’s top gives more views of the Skellig Islands.
The beach and sand dunes of Derrynane are a beautiful sight and we’ll follow them along the full length of the beach, watching the waves crashing against the clean white sand and dark rocks. We pick up the Derrynane nature trail here and keep our eyes peeled interesting flora and fauna. The tidal flats where the fresh waters join sea water are popular spot for bird-spotters.
At the end of 12KM walk, we sometimes stop for a swim and/or refreshment in one of the local hostelries.
On return to Álaind Lodges, we’ll enjoy apre-walk refreshments before getting ready for your chosen evening dining in Sneem village.
Starting near the famous Torc Waterfall, we’ll join a trail through the forest to take us up to the Old Kenmare Road i.e. The Kerry Way or Butter Road.
Stepping out onto the Kerry Way, the valleys ahead open up. Flanked by Mangerton Mountain on your left and Torc on your right, it’s a picture of beauty. Without a mechanised sound to be heard here, you’ll quickly feel a sense of calm wash over you.
Torc Mounatin is our destination for the day and thanks to National Parks Department, ascending it is easier than you might think. We’ll follow a boardwalk to the summit, keeping our boots nice and dry as we zigzag our way to the top.
Once there you’ll be treated to a view of Killarney that’s hard to rival. Mangerton lies behind, the high Reeks Mountain to your left and the magnificent Killarney lakes directly in front of you. What a reward for your walking efforts and it can one of the best spots for lunch.
On our retreat we’ll take in the waterfall itself which is a favourite photo opportunity for anyone visiting Killarney.
After relaxing for a while with a drink at Álaind Lodges, you’ll retire to your rooms to freshen up and get ready for your chosen evening dining in Sneem village.2

You can walk year round in Sneem as even winter conditions are mild with snow and ice being uncommon. The average weather temperatures are between 7C degrees (45F degrees ) in January and February, and 15.5C degrees (60F degrees) in July and August. In fact the weather is largely frost free thanks to the warm Atlantic Gulf Stream that allows even semi-tropical vegetation to thrive here.
