Developing Your Mountain Navigation Skills

The inky blackness of the Dunkerron Mountains held a different kind of beauty last weekend as the beams of headlamps danced across the rugged terrain. This wasn't just a hike; it was a crucial lesson in trust – trust in your map, your compass, and your newfound night navigation skills, all part of Alaind Walking Ireland's immersive Mountain Skills 2 course.

A Recap of the Mountain Skills 2 Weekend

Last weekend saw a group of enthusiastic adventurers immerse themselves in the challenging yet rewarding Mountain Skills 2 course, hosted by Alaind Walking Ireland. From intricate compass work under the vast Irish sky to the thrill of night navigation in the majestic Dunkerrons, the two-day intensive training provided participants with invaluable skills for confident mountain exploration.

Day 1 Highlight:

  • Mastering the Compass: The course kicked off with a deep dive into the art and science of compass navigation. Participants honed their skills in taking bearings, adjusting for magnetic north (relevant for our Irish landscapes!), and confidently navigating using only map and compass.
  • Walking the Lines: The afternoon saw the group putting their newfound knowledge into practice, traversing the landscape by meticulously following contour lines. This crucial skill allows for efficient and safe movement across varied terrain, bringing them to the stunning Coom Lakes.

  • Into the Darkness: Night Navigation in the Dunkerrons: As dusk descended, the real adventure began. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, participants embarked on a three-hour night navigation exercise in the Dunkerrons. This immersive experience tested their skills in low-visibility conditions, building confidence and highlighting the importance of precise navigation. The successful descent onto the Fermoyle Loop under the starry sky was a testament to their learning.
