As far as walking challenges in Ireland go, Carrauntoohil is at the top of the list. As well as being Ireland’s tallest mountain, it offers you great choice of approach routes for your visit. From the directness of the Devil’s Ladder to the circumnavigation of the Coomloughra Horseshoe, it provides exhilarating experiences for all those it attracts. Of course at 1,038m high, navigational and walking experience are necessities and so many sensibly choose a guide. As a Mountain Leader guide myself, I detail here some of the less frequented routes to the summit of Carrauntoohil.
